Doug Shirley Scholarship Awarded for 2011

Carson Miles Dearman, cousin of Wesley Beckham, has been awarded the Doug Shirley Memorial Scholarship for 2011.   Below is his statement.

A second ZOCC scholarship will be awarded as an athletic scholarship through WCU's athletic department.

Currently, I’m a rising freshman preparing to attend Western Carolina University in the fall. I hope to use this education as a means to accomplish my goals of someday using the gifts I’ve been given by God to better the world around me. The utilization of these gifts, depending on the path I take in college may become entrepreneurship, logistics management, or a career as a young life or youth group leader. I believe these possibilities stem from the interests and hobbies I’ve held through high school, and as a young adult. For example, having to recognize and meet the needs of a band that has over a hundred students under me as drum major gave me a taste of what my abilities were in logistics. This came as a side effect, however, as I was only actively pursuing my love of music. In pursuit of that love of music, I would love to be a part of the Catamount Marching band. However, I don’t want to try and hold a job plus be in the band, while staying in the honors college, all during my freshman year. With things like this scholarship, my need for a job decreases, and I can pursue the aspects of college besides the financial and academic. Certainly, I’ve already accepted whatever aid I’ve been approved for or offered, with a majority of that aid coming from the honors college. The fact that the honors college would offer me that scholarship should indicate some large portion of my efforts thus far, and the promise of my efforts yet to come. I plan on being a good student, and a moral citizen of the community. I plan to do these things whether or not I receive this scholarship, but I believe that my association with the Zeta Omicron fraternity would be mutually beneficial, to both our images, besides financially helpful to myself. There’s a lot more here I could type out and bore you with, but for your convenience in a nutshell, this is how I identify myself, and why I need this scholarship.
